Start With Your MIT First!

My clients often ask me the secret to being super productive and one of the key things I tell them is to start with the MIT or MOST IMPORTANT TASK first!

Starting the day with emails or dealing with meetings or staff issues is an incredible waste of your energy – especially if it’s distracting you from working on the tasks that will move the business forward.

And while you might feel productive powering through a ton of emails, it’s more correct to call this ‘busy time’ rather than productive time.

So here’s what I do – I block out a minimum of 90 minutes in my calendar first thing in the morning for my MIT’s.

I do NOT take phone calls, check emails, deal with staff or anything of the sort. No meetings, Facebook and no coffee breaks – nothing!

That 90 minute block is for one purpose and one purpose only – high-level tasks that move the needle forward in your business – period.

Action Points:

  • Identify your MIT’s for the week ahead (I usually do this on a Monday)
  • Schedule the time into your calendar
  • Switch off your mobile and close down other tabs or anything else which may distract you
  • Work that session with focus (I find playing an audio for concentration really helps like this one here)
  • Take a 15 minute break away from your desk
  • Then either repeat the session or move onto other tasks

The beauty about this is you can implement this immediately and you’ll be surprised with how much you actually get done in the week.
